Pounds of Killer Beauty

Every morning starting at 5 a.m., my cat George (18.3 pounds) sits in-between my face and chest. The first five minutes are okay, but later I am forced to get up and fill up his food bowl before he suffocates me.

In a tribe of 7000 members called Padaung, their legends say that brass rings around a woman's neck protect her from tiger bites. The practice creates a specific individual and tribal identity.

18.3 pounds of a cat may be heavy, but it does not compare to the weight these Padaung women carry on their bodies daily. About 20 pounds for the neck brass + 30 pounds of the rings worn around her arms and legs = a minimum of 50 pounds of weight to carry. Scientifically, society placed an alarmingly unhealthy condition that targets women. This social pressure, literally, perceives them to be considered more beautiful, but medical pains that associate this legend include:

1. Women cannot walk from this brass, they waddle
2. Negative effects on their voices
3. If the brass is cut out (as it is used for punishment) death can occur
4. Inability to drink water the normal way
5. Increased downward pressure on other body parts

In addition, a sign of her wealth is shown through more coins and chains wrapped around her neck. One cannot claim a woman incapable if they place her under circumstances that make her such.
